Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Thursday said that it has signed contracts to buy upto 800 megawatts electricity from two huge solar power plants to be built near the Central California coast.

Julia Hamm, SEPA’s executive director, said PG&E’s announcement “represents the largest single photovoltaic commitment from an electric utility anywhere in the world.”

800 megawatts power is enough for 29,000 homes.  They will purchase this power from subsidiaries of Hayward-based OptiSolar Inc. and San Jose-based SunPower Corp.  After hours, SunPower is up $5.18, or 6.6%, to $83.75
