A few analyst rating changes to tell you about today.
Bank of America (BAC) is maintaining its Buy rating on Cree Inc (CREE) and increased 2012 EPS estimates to $3.21 per share. Shares of CREE are holding the flat line today despite a healthy down day in the overall market.
Cree Inc (CREE) announced a big breakthrough this morning in the development of silicon carbide technology which is used in the production of a broad range of products including LEDs. They have demonstrated the use of 150mm diameter substrates enabling further cost reduction and greater throughput over the standard 100mm size.
It was a good day for Veeco Instruments (VECO) despite the fact the stock finished down a bit. In the morning, Citi maintained its Buy rating and $52 price target. Hat tip to Street Insider for the analyst comment:

Energy Focus announced this morning that Stones River Companies, LLC, its lighting retrofit division, has snagged $2.8 million in new lighting energy services contracts. The 7 new contracts announced today include upgrading the lighting at multiple locations of a major healthcare system, upgrading lighting in three elementary school districts and upgrading the lighting at four fortune 500 industrial facilities.
Veeco Instruments just announced that it will be selling its metrology business, Veeco Metrology, to Bruker Corporation in order to focus on building its LED, solar and data storage businesses.
In a John R. Peeler, Veeco’s Chief Executive Officer, explained the rationale for selling Veeco Metrology:

Nexxus Lighting (NEXS) posted mixed earnings results this morning, missing on EPS but beating on the revenue side. The company posted an EPS loss of .12 vs the analyst estimate of a .10/share loss. Revenues came in higher than the analyst estimate of $3.15 million at $3.75 million. China Intelligent Lighting and Electronics (CIL) is reporting mixed Q2 results this morning, missing on the EPS side posting .18 vs the estimate of .20. They beat on revenues posting $18.5 million vs the analyst estimate of $17.5 million. It should be noted that these are the numbers of the lone analyst covering this company. On July 19th, I passed along the post at Notable Calls saying that UBS was expecting a big LED order for both Veeco Instruments (VECO) and Aixtron (AIXG) from Elec-Tech. This morning, Veeco is confirming a large order from Elec-Tech for 130 of its TurboDisc K465i Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition, or MOCVD, systems as their “tool of choice” for two new LED factories in Wuhu and Yangzhou, China.
