Veeco Instruments just announced that it will be selling its metrology business, Veeco Metrology, to Bruker Corporation in order to focus on building its LED, solar and data storage businesses.
In a John R. Peeler, Veeco’s Chief Executive Officer, explained the rationale for selling Veeco Metrology:

BorgWarner just announced that it is raising its guidance for earnings in 2010 from $1.40 to $1.70 per share to $2.20 to $2.50 per share. Currently, the consensus estimate for 2010 is $1.77 per share.… Read the rest
After the bell today First Solar (FSLR) issued guidance for next year with revenues expected to come in between $2.7 – $2.9 billion and EPS between $6.05 – $6.85/share. The Street was expecting $2.4 billion in revenues and a $6.55/share EPS, so about in line on the EPS side but more optimistic on the revenue side. It was a very good day for solar stocks, particularly for First Solar (FSLR) which surged above its 50 day moving average for the first time in 4 months and continues to look like it put in a bottom down there around 100. JA Solar announced it is revising it’s guidance for the 4th quarter based on the economic slowdown.
Previously, the company had predicted revenue of RMB 1.3 billion or $191.5 million to RMB 1.5 billion or $220.9 million. However. JA Solar has reduced that expectation to about RMB 843 million or $124 million. The company still expects to earn a gross margin of between 5 to 7 percent and expects to break even on earnings/ADS.
