Trina Solar (TSL) along with many of its competitors have been whacked on news that Germany will cut solar subsidies, but there is some good news to report out of Germany for Trina Solar this morning. The company has announced an agreement with ITEC for 40MW in solar modules to be delivered this year – 18MW in the first half. Prices have been agreed on for the first quarter and shipping has already begun.
The time and place for Suntech Power’s (STP) first US solar panel manufacturing plant are now official. The company announced today from the AZ4Solar Symposium that the plant will open up in Goodyear, Arizona around September of this year with an initial capacity of 30MW, but expandable to 120MW to meet growing demand if necessary. Canadian Solar just announced a new sales contract with Fire Energy Group. Under the contract, Canadian Solar will provide Fire Energy with 60MW of solar PV modules, with shipments expected to start this month. Fire Energy Group will also promote Canadian Solar’s product line in the following countries: Spain, Germany, Italy, the U.S., the Czech Republic, Morocco and China.
EMCORE (EMKR) is winning an increasing number of solar panel contracts to be used in spacecraft and it got another one today. The company announced a $9 – 11 million deal to provide solar panels for ATK Space Systems UltraFlex solar arrays to be used in the Orion spacecraft being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. The initial contract is for two vehicles, but could be expanded.
According to StreetInsider.com, Jefferies is out with several solar upgrades following the two week plunge.
SunPower (SPWRA) upgraded from Hold to Buy, but price target lowered from $30 to $29. Shares are up 2.5% to $21.75 this morning. Shares are up about 3% in premarket trading.
Suntech (STP) upgraded from Underperform to Hold with a $12 target. Shares are basically flat in premarket trading.

Quantum Fuel Systems (QTWW) is announcing that it is one of 12 companies that has been selected by the LA Dept of Water & Power to be qualified suppliers for materials and services necessary for solar power projects around the city to meet the Renewable Portfolio Standard mandate. Energy Conversion Devices just announced that it will build a 30MW solar laminate manufacturing facility in France. The company has not settled on a site yet, but is considering locating the facility in Alsace.
In a press release, Mark Morelli, ECD’s president and chief executive officer, explained the decision:

Yingli Green Energy (YGE) just announced that the Chinese government has approved the company’s application to use their manufacturing base in Baoding, China as the site of the country’s first State Key Laboratory of PV Technology. The purpose of the laboratory will be to foster the development of world class solar PV development in China, and Yingli will have dibs on commercialization rights to technologies developed there.
