Seven emerging solar technologies, 7700 solar panels, 8 acres, 740kW of electricity and one big challenge.. to see which emerging solar technology is the baddest of them all.  The competition goes down as the sun comes up each and every day in the sun basked, wind swept confines of a former refinery owned by none other than the evil oil empire Chevron.

Chevron (CVX) will play host and judge to this solar showdown between six thin film solar contestants and one renegade silicon contestant all of whom are hoping to make a name for themselves in this cut throat industry, not to mention reap a bit of profit by powering Chevron’s facilities.  The Solar Battle At Brightfield begins now.

“By bringing together seven emerging solar technologies, Project Brightfield represents one of the most comprehensive solar energy tests of its kind and is an innovative approach to evaluating new technologies,” said Des King, president of Chevron Technology Ventures, the division of Chevron U.S.A. Inc. that identifies, evaluates and demonstrates emerging technologies. “Testing competing technologies side by side means that we can better understand their potential application at other Chevron facilities.”

The contestants, all of which are privately held companies: Abound Solar, MiaSole, Schuco, Solar Frontier, Sharp, Solibro and Innovalight.
