Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. announced today that it will provide its Q-Drive high-performance plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle architecture to its affiliate Fisker. Fisker will use the Q-Drive vehicle architecture to produce its sporty "KARMA" plug-in hybrid. The KARMA will be able to go for up to 50 miles on its electric battery alone, with a hybrid gasoline engine for longer trips.

The Karma can be charged using a normal 110-volt electric outlet, or a special solar-powered recharging station. According to Fisker, if you remember to plug it in every night and drive less than 50 miles a day, you could achieve fuel efficiency of up to 100 miles per gallon!

However, beauty and performance come with a price. In this case, the base price is $87,900.

Courtesy of HotStocked.com, here’s a little more information about Quantum Fuel Systems’ Q-Drive- hopefully the technology will become more affordable in the years to come:

Quantum’s innovative powertrain, Q-Drive utilizes a large, powerful lithium ion battery and a powerful 2-line direct injected turbo-charged 4-cylinder gasoline engine developing 260 hp, which enables the KARMA to achieve a continuous top speed of 125 mph and a 0-60 of 5.8 seconds. The large and powerful lithium ion battery provides 22.6 kWh, which has unique control software. The two powerful electric motors deliver a combined 408 hp.
