American Superconductor (AMSC) Adds $70 Million China Wind Turbine Parts Order

American Superconductor (AMSC) is announcing this morning another order out of China, this time a $70 million order from Shenyang Blower Works for wind turbine electrical control systems.  The order is the largest initial order for the electrical control systems AMSC has ever received.

SBW will use the parts in the 2MW doubly fed induction turbines developed with AMSC.  The company plans to begin putting up the turbines next month, but the parts from AMSC won’t ship until later this year over the course of 3 years.

Said AMSC CEO Greg Yurek, “The magnitude of this electrical control system contract sends a strong signal that Shenyang Blower Works is positioned to be a key player in China’s vibrant wind power market.  The company is planning to begin volume production later this year and sees significant long-term potential for this new line of business. AMSC expects to help every step of the way with its world-class wind turbine engineering, customer service and electrical control technologies and products.”

Shares of AMSC are up over 3% in early trading.
