American Superconductor (AMSC) and LS Cable of South Korea, who is the third largest power cable manufacturer in the world, have announced an expanded superconductor power cable business alliance.  The first began working together last year and this expansion calls the collaborative deployment of more than 30 miles of smart grid power cables over the next five years.

The power cable systems manufactured by LS Cable will incorporate AMSC’s proprietary HTS wire branded as 344 (catchy isn’t it?)  AMSC’s cables conduct up to 10x the power of conventional cables and suppress power surges for protection against attack and natural disasters.

LC Cable President Jongho Son commented on the deal:  “LS Cable is focused on developing and implementing world-class technologies to both meet the evolving energy needs of today’s economy and provide the infrastructure necessary to support tomorrow’s growth. Superconductor cables offer unique power density, efficiency and security advantages compared to conventional power cables and will play a key role in providing the necessary backbone to support the Smart Grid in Korea and locations around the world. We are pleased to expand this important strategic alliance with AMSC.”

Last year, South Korea announced it would invest $25 billion in smart grid technologies to become the first country to convert its entire grid to a “smart grid”.

AMSC is up about 2% in premarket trading.
