First Solar (FSLR) Strikes Deal To Supply Energy To Masdar City

First Solar has been chosen to supply Masdar Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. with solar modules to help power Masdar City. First Solar will supply 5 megawatts worth of solar modules, which will be integrated into the Middle East’s largest grid-connected PV system.

Applied Materials (AMAT) Wins IEC Certification For Its SunFab Modules

Applied Materials, Inc, announced that its SunFab solar modules are now IEC-Certified. The certification shows that the modules have been tested to withstand extreme environmental conditions and should reduce the time it takes to put the modules on the market.

FPL Energy Services (FPL) Wins Federal Contracts

FPL Energy Services, a subsidiary of FPL Energy Group, announced yesterday that it just won a $5 billion contract with the federal government. FPL Energy Services will help the government meet goals related to conserving water, reducing energy use, and switching to renewable energy.

Akeena Solar (AKNS) Announces Completion Of San Francisco’s Largest Commercial Solar Power Installation

Working with Solar Power Partners, Inc, Akeena Solar announced the completion of a 385-kilowatt solar power installation in San Francisco. The system is San Francisco’s largest commercial solar power installation to date. Akeena Solar provided the system itself, and Solar Power Partners developed and financed the project. Solar Power Partners will also operate the system and sell the power it generates to the site owners.

Xcel Energy (XEL) Seeks Funding For Clean Energy Research

Xcel Energy has requested permission from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to raise $6 million per year for clean energy research. The funds would be raised by adding a nominal fee to customers’ bills. Most residential customers would pay an extra .14 per month, and most small businesses would see a .22 increase.

LDK Solar (LDK) Delays Polysilicon Production Expansion

LDK Solar announced yesterday that it has delayed two polysilicon projects with a total production capacity of 6,000 tons. Originally, LDK had planned to increase its 2008 production capacity by 6,000 tons. According to TradingMarkets.com, 5,000 tons of that amount was supposed to come from a 15,000-t/y polysilicon project and 1,000 tons was supposed to come from from a 1,000-t/y polysilicon project. Suntech (STP) Cuts 800 Jobs

Suntech’s pre-global financial crisis plans included hiring 2000 more employees and expanding its capacity to 1.5 GW in 2009. Instead, plans for expansion have been put on hold, and the company has laid off 800 of its employees, 10% of its workforce. According to TradingMarkets.com, the cuts were made on the basis of competency, with the least competent employees being laid off.

Suntech (STP) Signs Deal With Open Energy

Suntech and Open Energy now have an exclusive partnership to license Open Energy’s  building integrated solar roof membrane product. Suntech will manufacture, distribute and market the new product, a flat roof membrane that will be called SolarEze. The product is easy to install and durable, able to withstand extreme weather conditions.

AES Solar Energy Ltd (AES) Secures Funding For 5 Spanish Solar Projects

AES Solar Energy Ltd announced that it has secured funding for 5 of its planned solar PV projects in Spain. According to the company, which is a joint venture between AES Corporation and Riverstone Holdings LLC, one of its subsidiaries obtained €70 million loan for the projects.
