Lieberose Solar Farm, a solar farm now being built in Germany by juwi Group and First Solar Inc, just became the second-largest solar farm in the world, as the 560,000th solar panel was placed into installation by by German Infrastructure Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee and Brandenburg Minister President Matthias Platzeck. Once it’s finished, the project, which is being built on an old Soviet Army training site in Brandenburg, Germany, will produce 52 MW of power.
In addition to building a solar farm that produces clean energy, First Solar and juwi are also removing contaminated soil from the site.
In a press release, executives from both companies commented on the project:
“We aim to enable a global power supply with clean and cost-efficient solar energy. The Lieberose project alone will help save about 35,000 tons of CO2 per year,” say First Solar Managing Director Stephan Hansen and juwi Head Matthias Willenbacher. “We are especially proud of this project, because it is also ‘clean’ in another sense of that word. It is not only generating clean energy, but also ensures the removal of dangerous munitions.”
