Itron just announced that it will be collaborating on smart grid solutions with Tropos Networks. The two companies will work together to develop an integrated network solution for the utility market as well as other smart grid applications. The solution will allow utilities to create a private broadband network for utility applications.

In a press release, Philip Mezey, Itron North America senior vice president and chief operating officer, commented on the news and explained how the partnership will benefit his company:

“From its inception, Itron has viewed the smart grid as a ‘network-of-networks’. This vision is coming to fruition in the form of multiple partnerships that utilize networks beyond advanced metering. Innovative collaboration with Tropos Networks allows Itron to extend the functionality of its smart grid platform beyond the meter to the next wave of applications, as well as offering carrier-class network management.”
