More good news for First Solar (FSLR) tonight. In addition to posting strong guidance for next year, the company is announcing that NRG Energy (NRG) will purchase its 290MW Agua Caliente project in Yuma, Arizona. The project when completed in 2014 is expected to be the largest operating solar farm in the world and provide clean electricity to nearly 225,00 homes. It should be noted though while all permits have been received and early construction phases have begun, the acquisition is contingent upon receiving a federal loan guarantee for the project.

“Agua Caliente is representative of our mission to provide clean, affordable, sustainable solar energy, capitalizing on our advanced thin-film technology and the tremendous solar resource of Arizona,” said Rob Gillette, CEO of First Solar. “We are very pleased to further expand our relationship with NRG as the owner of Agua Caliente, the first of our multi-hundred-megawatt utility-scale projects to begin construction.”
