NRG Energy just announced that it has been chosen by the city of Houston to build and operate a 10 MW solar power installation, according to Reuters. The project will be constructed at NRG’s Wharton Generating Station using  First Solar’s PV modules.

The City of Houston has agreed to buy the power produced by the solar installation as well as from NRG’s conventional power plant under a fixed-price, 25 year contract. The price starts out at 8.2 cents per kilowatt-hour including all energy sources. Solar power alone will cost 19.8 center per kilowatt hour. The price will change over the life of the contract.  The installation is expected to be up and running next year.
