Canadian Solar just announced its intention to build a new solar panel manufacturing plant in Ontario, Canada. The company is currently making plans and determining the plant’s exact location, size and cost. The plans are expected to be finalized next year. Tentatively, the company plans to build a 200MW plant with an estimated cost of approximately C$24 million. A plant of this size would create 500 new manufacturing jobs and produce enough solar modules to power 60,000 homes per year.
In a press release, Milfred Hammerbacher, President of the subsidiary, Canadian Solar Solutions Inc, commented on the plans:
“When considering Ontario for our next investment in manufacturing, we looked at the strength of R&D and the governments’ commitment to investing in a low carbon economy. We are looking forward to working with government representatives in creating jobs and a viable solar market in Ontario and across Canada.”
