LDK Solar, a company from China that manufactures solar wafers, held a ceremony 0n August 23rd to celebrate increased production capacity. At this time, their plant is capable of producing 1.0 GW of wafers, and they plan to increase that even further to 1.2 GW capacity by the end of the year.

A nice 220 million contract for Applied Materials (AMAT) was announced this morning and under terms of the deal, AMAT will supply precision wafering systems to support LDK Solar’s expansion plans and begin shipping in early 09.

The going is good for LDK Solar. First the blow out earnings results yesterday, this morning a new 5 year contract to supply multicrystalline wafers to India based XL Telecom & Energy. They will deliver about 300 MW of the silicon wafers over the 5 yr period, beginning in early 09 with XL Telecom making a down payment for a portion of the contract value. LDK Solar (LDK) just got a 10 year contract with Photovoltech to supply multicrystalline solar wafers to Belgium based Photovoltech. LDK will begin supplying the wafers in 2009 with a total of 400MW over the 10 years
