Akeena Solar (AKNS) Misses, Nearing All Time Lows

Akeena Solar (AKNS) was hit with higher costs last quarter, leading to a miss on its earnings report.  The company reported a wider loss than what analysts were expecting (.15/share) with 5.1 million in losses (.18/share) in the quarter, compared with a loss of 1.9 million in the year ago quarter.  The company also mentioned that it has cut 36 jobs since the beginning of the year.

Clean Harbors (CLHB) Beats Estimates

Clean Harbors (CLHB) reported better than expected earnings this morning and raised its full year 2008 revenue outlook.  After initially selling off this morning, the stock has recovered significantly and reclaimed key support levels.

The company credited the strong results to growth across all segments and higher utilization of its domestic incinerators. 

The company reported a 44% jump in income which beat estimates.  Revenue rose 11% from the year ago period which also edged estimates.   … Read the rest

Altairnano (ALTI) Reports Another Loss, But Beats Estimates; Announces Army Contract

Altair (ALTI) the lithium battery maker for electric cars reported another quarterly loss of .07/share but beat estimates by a couple pennies on revenue of 1.9 million (vs consensus of 1.65 million). 

Today, the company also announced a $350,000 contract with the US Army to deliver prototype batteries for use in the Army’s M119 105mm lightweight gun digitization program.  Altair’s batteries can operate in extreme conditions with rapid charging capabilities and a long life.

EMCORE Corporation (EMKR) Lands Over $40 Million In Contracts

A press release from EMCORE Corporation, announces that the company has entered into two new agreements to deliver solar cells and receivers with a total value of over $40 million. The larger of the two purchase contracts is a multi-year supply agreement for solar cells. The customers placing these orders are targeting CPV (concentrating photovoltaics) use in the United States with a particular focus on the California market. Akeena Solar (AKNS) Quality Issues With Andalay Line

According to Barron’s Tech Trader Daily blog, Pacific Crest analyst Mark Bachman reveals quality problems with Akeenas’ solar panels.  Some of the problems he mentions, quoting information revealed by his contacts, involve the frame, not the performance of the modules themselves. Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) reports profit slide

ADM reported a drop in fiscal fourth-quarter profit even as the company’s sales were boosted by higher commodity prices.

ADM reported net income in the quarter ended June 30 of $372 million, or 58 cents a share, down from $955 million, or $1.47 a share, a year earlier.
