Production has started at BioProcessAlgae, LLC’s (a joint venture between Green Plains Renewable Energy, water filtration group CLARCOR Inc, BioProcessH2O LLC and NTR plc) Phase I photobioreactor pilot project. Green Plains Renewable Energy just scored a $2.1 million grant from the Iowa Office of Energy Independence for a pilot project that aims to use ethanol plant by-products to grow algae. The project would use heat, carbon dioxide and wastewater to grow algae, which could then be added to animal feed or used to produce more biofuels.

Green Plains Renewable Energy just announced that it will work with several other companies to begin producing biodiesel and ethanol from algae.
