China’s HECIC New Energy Co., Ltd has selected GE Energy to supply wind turbines for 3 wind projects three new projects in Hebei and Shanxi Provinces. Under the agreement, GE will supply 88 1.5-megawatt wind turbines to HECIC New Energy. To make the turbines easier to connect to the grid and to improve reliability and stability, they will include GE’s Low Voltage Ride-Through and Wind Farm Management Systems technology.
There’s a good piece from Eric Savitz over at Barron’s discussing the loss of business Broadwind Energy (BWEN) faces following the cancellation by Boone Pickens of half of that large, $2 billion wind turbine order from GE. Broadwind supplies parts to GE for these turbines and the stock is getting hit as a result. The selling picked up yesterday and continues today with record sell volume. A return to the November lows appears inevitable.
A-Power Energy (APWR) has announced it signed an exclusive 2MW wind turbine deal with W2E Technologies and will license W2E technology to manufacture, operate, service and sell the turbines within the US and China. APWR will have non exclusive rights to market the turbines outside of China & the US. Financials of the deal haven’t been disclosed. Traders like the news premarket and the stock is up about 4%.
American Superconductor Corp just announced that Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. has placed a follow on order for 30 sets of electrical control systems to be used in AMSC’s 1.65 MW wind turbines. Hyundai also ordered electrical control systems for their own 2 MW turbine prototype from AMSC. All of the equipment ordered by Hyundai is scheduled to be shipped by May of next year.
Kaydon (KDN) which makes specialty ball bearings for wind turbines posted a 27% quarter over quarter profit drop from last year but beat analyst estimates of .41/share by posting .45/share excluding one time losses. Revenues increased over the year ago just a bit by 7%. Too bad its wind turbine business doesn’t make up more of the total revenue. American Superconductor (AMSC) is releasing preliminary earnings results this evening and they aren’t pretty. The company’s revenue estimates are about in line with analyst estimates at around 41 million, but the company is expecting larger losses for the quarter due to estimated cost overruns on its turnkey SVC projects, higher Windtec engineering costs, charges for excess inventory and unfavorable exchange rates. Despite missing the Street’s view, A-Power Energy (APWR) is moving higher after hours. That’s the kind of action that needs to be seen to mark a bottom in these green stocks. It’s an indication that finally the doom and gloom has been fully priced in. A-Power Energy (APWR), once a high flying China wind play now trading less than 6 bucks a share is announcing some decent contracts. Today, it announced the 2nd contract with China National Automation and this one is 10x the size of the previous contract announced just a few days ago.
