Upgrades/Downgrades: STP to Sell, TRN & JASO to Buy; ORA Upgraded to Accumulate

Hat tip to StreetInsider.com for the following upgrade/downgrade notes:

Hapoalim downgrades Suntech Power (STP) to Sell with a $9 price target, citing escalating solar module price war.
The firm said, “Evidenced by Ersol’s recent decision to adjust the mid-point of its CY09 EBIT guidance to “negative” vs. +12% before (due to a “sig. drop in prices of solar modules”), we believe “Tier 1” module vendors are beginning to react to price aggression by Chinese solar module vendors; as such, given STP’s higher cost structure vs. TSL/YGE, & inability to mask EPS upside w/ “GSF-like” tactics moving forward, we downgrade to SELL.”

Suntech is trading up 3% and holding steady at the 200 day moving average.  It’s being propped up on news of tentative agreements for 1.8GW of governmental solar projects

Needham & Co initiates coverage on JA Solar (JASO) with a Buy. Price target $5.
It’s not getting much of a pop today and remains submerged below the 50 and 200 day moving averages.

JANCO upgraded geothermal leader Ormat Technologies (ORA) from Market Perform to Accumulate and raised the price target from $36 to $43.
JANCO said in addition to the existing projects contributing to Electricity Segment revenues in the FQ1 2009, they expect a number of other projects to come on line at various stages during FY2009 and FY2010 (Puna 2, North Brawley, East Brawley, Carson Lake, Jersey Valley, Peetz).  The firm remains positive on Ormat’s business model and management execution. However, given the ongoing challenging capital market conditions and overall multiple compression, the firm is refraining from assigning a higher multiple than 24X.

Ormat is seeing good strength today, up over 4% with heavy volume but remains below resistance of 50 day moving average.

Longbow Research upgraded Trinity Industries (TRN) from Neutral to Buy. Price target $15.50.

The maker of wind turbines is up over 12% with very heavy volume but also remains submerged below resistance.
