Earlier today, I posted about A-Power Energy’s (APWR) shipment of a prototype wind turbine to the US and mentioned it was a great time to consider getting long APWR. While APWR is better known for its wind turbine business, they have construction operations in a variety of industries.
Auriga is out with a research note on select stocks today and remains generally bullish on the sector. They indicate that industry fundamentals remain strong both in terms of pricing and volume. Q1 volumes are strong and sold out in some cases as pricing remains firm while the 2nd half of 2011 warrants cautious optimism rather than pessimism. Here are notes on some individual names.

UQM Technologies (UQM) announced yesterday it received another large order from hybrid/electric bus manufacturer Proterra and will supply 150 electric propulsion systems for use in their new all electric buses. The initial supply term is for one year and the total contract could reach $1 million.
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard any news regarding the controversial 600MW wind farm in Texas in which China based A-Power Energy (APWR) owns a large portion, but yesterday the company announced it has shipped a 2MW prototype wind turbine to Texas to be installed and tested.
General Electric (GE) has already established a presence in the China wind energy market, supplying them with nearly 1000 wind turbines and today the company is announcing it will be a bigger player after securing a joint venture deal with a subsidiary of Harbin Power Equipment. The venture between the two companies will manufacture GE designed turbines for onshore and offshore wind farms. Harbin will be the majority owner with a 51% stake.
According to Fly On the Wall, China Wind Systems (CWS) has updated guidance and sees FY10 EPS in the range of 62 – 65c vs the estimate from one analyst of 42c. They see revenues about inline with the estimate of $80 million at $76.5 – $85 million.
Molycorp (MCP) is known as the emerging US based rare earth metals miner and the stock has soared in anticipation of successful mining of these important metals in the coming years. However, the company has some other revenue streams in the works. The company on Friday announced that its rare earth metals based water purification technology was available for commercial use.
A big wave energy milestone has been reached here in the US. Ocean Power Technologies(OPTT) has for the first time in US history successfully completed the connection of a wave energy device to the energy grid. The PowerBuoy was connected to the grid with the help of the US Navy at a Marine base in Hawaii.
