Cree Inc (CREE) recently announced that its new XLamp XP-E High Efficiency White LEDs which enable LED fixture and bulb manufacturers to use half the amount of LEDs are now commercially available. The new LEDs which use Cree’s Direct Attach technology will help drive down costs while delivering the same performance.

Philips Lumileds, the LED division of Royal Philips (PHG) has announced it’s the first company to mass produce the larger 150mm wafers used for LEDs. The larger wafers allow for 4x the number of LEDs as the old 3 inch wafers and is a key advancement to accelerating the production of LEDs for the lighting revolution. The increased output and greater efficiency will help drive down costs, acceleration adoption.
LED lighting products are an increasingly important revenue driver for Philips (PHG) with 10% of revenues coming from LED last year, 15% this year and potentially over 20% next year. The company’s goal is 50% of lighting revenues from LED by 2015 and 75% by 2020. Less than six months ago GT Solar (SOLR) made a key purchase of Crystal Systems that has allowed them to move from strictly offering solar manufacturing equipment to LED manufacturing equipment as well. It’s already paying off. The company has announced that it received its first orders totaling $84 million for its sapphire crystalization systems used for LED production.
