Cree just announced that the company will be expanding its presence in China with a new manufacturing plant. Cree is purchasing a new 592,000 square foot facility in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China. The facility will be used to produce chips (the first time Cree has produced chips overseas) and as a cornerstone for future expansion inside China.
In a press release, Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO, commented on the company’s plans:

Energy Focus, Inc just announced that it has been given a SBIR extension grant by DARPA to develop and produce LED lights for the US Navy. The LEDs will be designed to replace 50 and 110 Watt water tight incandescent fixtures now being used on Navy ships.

Cree, Inc just announced that its LED downlights have qualified for both commercial and residential EnergyStar Certification. The commercial EnergyStar qualifications are much tougher than the residential qualifications, as products are required to last 40 times longer.

Cree just announced a new supply contract with LG Display. Under the partnership agreement, Cree will supply LG with LED chips for flat-screen LCD devices. LG plans to expand the percentage of panels it produces that use LED-backlighting to approximately 50% of its total notebook LCD output.
Cree, Inc, announced that the University of California, Davis, has joined Cree’s LED University program. The college has installed a Bi-Level "Smart" Parking Light System From Cree at its South Entry Parking Structure. By installing the 50 BetaLED light fixtures, the University will achieve an average of 50 percent in energy savings.

Cree just announced a deal with Zumbotel to sell Cree’s LED recessed lighting products in Europe. Zumbotel will sell the products under two brand names: Zumbotel and Thorn. In the first year, they intend to sell 50,000 units of the 230V version of Cree’s LR6 luminaire.
