Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) Breaks Ground On DeSoto Solar Facility

Florida Power and Light announced that they have broken ground on their planned DeSoto Solar Energy Center, Florida’s first commercial solar energy facility. Once the center is completed, it will produce 25 MW of solar energy, making it the largest solar PV  facility in the US.

FPL Group President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Robo commented on the event:

NRG Board (NRG) Says Its Open To Deal With Exelon (EXC) But That Current Offer Unacceptable

NRG Energy released a statement yesterday in response to Exelon’s announcement that shareholders were in favor of combining the two companies. According to the statement, NRG is open to negotiating with Exelon, but only "at a fair exchange rate and on reasonable terms." NRG still feels that Exelon’s offer is unacceptable as is.

Exelon’s ComEd (EXC) Has The Nation’s 7th Largest Fleet Of Green Vehicles

A new report from GreenBiz.com and Automotive Fleet Magazine shows that ComEd, a unit of Exelon Corporation, has the nation’s seventh largest fleet of green vehicles. Among other utility companies, ComEd comes in second only to PG & E. ComEd’s fleet, which consists of 2,168 vehicles, reduces the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4.200 Metric tons annually. Losses Keep Mounting For Akeena Solar (AKNS)

Another awful quarter for Akeena Solar (AKNS) which continues to pile up losses with profitability nowhere in sight.  Akeena Solar reported a Q4 loss of $0.32, versus the analyst estimate of ($0.17). Shareholders Support Exelon-NRG Combination (EXC, NRG)

According to Exelon, NRG shareholders have positively to its offer to combine the two companies, tendering 125,403,103 shares of NRG’s common stock, over 51% of the outstanding shares. Exelon has extended its offer deadline until June 26th to seek regulatory approval and solicit proxies to serve at the NRG shareholder meeting.

Suntech (STP) Signs Distribution Deal With House Care

Suntech just announced a new distribution agreement with House Care Co, LTD. Under the terms of the agreement, House Care is authorized to distribute Suntech’s products to the Japanese market. In 2009, House Care expects to distribute 30MW of Suntech’s products.

Technically, Solar Opposites: First Solar (FSLR) & GT Solar (SOLR)

First Solar (FSLR) and GT Solar (SOLR) are what I’d call solar opposites, technically speaking.  One appears headed for a retest of the lows while the other appears ready to break out and continue moving higher.

Ormat Technologies (ORA) Beats Estimates

Ormat Technologies (ORA) which designs, develops and operates geothermal and recovered energy power plants beat earnings estimates this morning, posting an EPS of .26/share (analysts expected .25) which was 4% over the year ago quarter.  Revenues were strong in the quarter at 95.5 (an increase of 35% over last year) which also beat analyst estimates of $84 million.

China Sunergy (CSUN) Gets 20 – 25MW Contract From US Firm

China Sunergy (CSUN) has announced a new contract with an unnamed US PV firm to produce multi-silicon solar cells.  CSUN will buy silicon wafers from the US firm and in turn sell back solar cells.  The bilateral agreement is expected to begin in April.
