Trina Solar (TSL) Reports Loss But Beats Estimates

Trina Solar (TSL) reported results this morning with an EPS loss a bit lighter than expected at .03/share vs the estimate of a .04 loss.  Revenues were a bit better than expected as well at $216 million vs the analyst estimate of $201 million and exceeding the company’s previous guidance of $190 – $210.

Echelon (ELON) Announces Launch Of LonWorks 2.0

Echelon just announced the launch of its new product LonWorks 2.0. LonWorks 2.0 is a new platform for smart networks that the company says is faster, cheaper and easier to use than earlier systems were. The new system is compatible with existing LonWorks products, and is geared toward the commercial building sector, especially small buildings and companies who are trying to retrofit existing systems to make them more energy efficient.

Evergreen Solar (ESLR) Receives High Marks In Tests

Evergreen Solar’s ES-Series String Ribbon solar panel received the highest rating in a performance test performed by German test institute TÜV Rheinland Group. In the test, which is halfway completed, Evergreen Solar ‘s panels delivered the most kilowatt hours of electricity out of all 14 brands in the test. The test is still in progress-these results are for the first 6 months of what will be a year-long trial.

Nova Biosource Fuels (NBF) Receives Warning From NYSE Regarding Compliance

Bad news for Nova Biosource Fuels… the company received a notice from the New York Stock exchange yesterday, advising that it is not in compliance with Section 1003(a)(iv) of the NYSE Alternext US LLC Company Guide. Basically, the company has had so many losses that the Exchange is not sure whether it will be able to meet its obligations in the future. First Solar (FSLR) Pushing Further Into Utility Scale Solar Power With Purchase of OptiSolar

First Solar (FSLR) announced after the bell today that it will acquire all of OptiSolar’s project development business in an all stock transaction valued at approximately $400 million. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the 2nd quarter and includes:

– 550MW AC solar development project under a power purchase agreement with PG&E

Pacific Ethanol (PEIX) Shuts Stockton Plant Down Temporarily

Pacific Ethanol is temporarily halting production at its Stockton plant, laying off more than 20 workers. The company says that unfavorable market conditions prompted its decision, according to the Sacramento Bee.  Pacific Ethanol VP Paul Koehler told the newspaper that the company is halting production at the Stockton plant and a plant in Burley, Idaho:

LDK Solar (LDK) Cuts Electricity Needed To Produce Silicon By 2/3

LDK just announced that it has been able to substantially cut the electricity needed to produce one kilogram of silicon, reducing it from 300 kwh to 100 kwh.  The improvements in efficiency took place at LDK’s new polysilicon plant in Xinyu, Jiangxi province.

Darling International (DAR) Acquires Boca Industries

Darling International, a company that specializes in  recycling food by-products, has acquired the assets of Boca Industries, a company that provides grease-trap services to restaurants in Georgia and nearby states. Trex (TWP) Reports Steep Quarterly Loss, Stock Continues Slide

Trex (TWP) the maker of alternative wood decking and railing products reported a steeper than expected loss last quarter of .72/share vs analyst expectations of a .57/share loss.  Revenues were also light, coming in lower than expectations at $29.3 million.  IF there is a silver lining, the 4th quarter is historically a tough quarter for the company, with a loss of 2.75/share last year in the same quarter.  So, relative to last year, it was … Read the rest
