Ener1 (HEV) Brings In New Chief Technology Officer For EnerDel

Enerdel has a new Chief Technology Officer, Cyrus Ashtiani. Ashtiani comes with a glowing set of qualifications: 14 years of experience, 11 patents in the industry, and a wealth of experience that includes putting the first lithium-ion battery into a hybrid vehicle.

Johnson Controls (JCI) Releases 1st Quarter Results, Posts A Loss

Johnson Controls released its results last week for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009. The company performed below analysts’ expectations, posting a net loss of $608 million, which breaks down to $1.02 per share. Last year, the company posted a net profit of $235 million or .39 per share. Revenue also plummeted to $7.34 billion, a decrease of 23 percent from last year’s $9.48 billion.

American Superconductor (AMSC) Releases Preliminary Results, Expects Larger Losses

American Superconductor (AMSC) is releasing preliminary earnings results this evening and they aren’t pretty.  The company’s revenue estimates are about in line with analyst estimates at around 41 million, but the company is expecting larger losses for the quarter due to estimated cost overruns on its turnkey SVC projects, higher Windtec engineering costs, charges for excess inventory and unfavorable exchange rates.  Excuses, excuses, excuses.  Yep, it was a poorly executed quarter all the way around … Read the rest

Suntech (STP) To Work With First Solar (FSLR) On Masdar City Project

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd is joining First Solar to help construct a solar power plant for the Middle East’s first sustainable city, Masdar City. The city, which is under construction in the United Arab Emirates, will be carbon neutral and generate no waste. The total size of the farm will be 10 MW, with Suntech and First Solar each contributing 5 MW.

ReneSola (SOL) And BP Solar Sign Supply Deal

ReneSola and BP Solar have signed a supply agreement with each other. Under the contract, ReneSola will provide 120 MW of monocrystalline and multicrystalline solar wafers in 2009. BP will then provide ReneSola with 700 metric tons of polysilicon.

ReneSola’s CEO, Mr. Xianshou Li, commented on the significance of the deal:

RMT Inc (LNT) Completes Largest Michigan Wind Farm

RMT Inc, a unit of Alliant Energy Corporation, announced that its Michigan Wind 1 facility is up and running. The facility, located near Ubly, Michigan, began producing power last month. Each year, the wind farm is expected to produce enough power to supply 20,000 homes.

LDK Solar (LDK) Begins Phase I Of 16,000-ton Polysilicon Project

LDK Solar held an opening ceremony for Phase I of its 16,000-ton polysilicon project. Construction began on the project in Xinyu City, China in February of last year. The project will eventually produce 16,000 tons of polysilison per year, which will be used to make solar wafers. This will help decrease LDK’s production cost while ensuring a reliable supply. Details About Pacific Gas & Electric’s (PCG) WaveConnect Wave Energy Project

Pacific Gas & Electric briefed Fort Bragg city and county government representatives on their planned WaveConnect wave energy project. Some of the details that emerged from the briefing:

  • PG & E will pay the city’s wave energy costs.

  • PG & E will make the results of all environmental studies public.

  • PG & E is considering 10 different, viable wave technologies and implement a pilot project to test the 3 or 4 that seem most promising.
