Valence Technology, Inc announced today that the Opposition Board of the European Patent Office has revoked the University of Texas’ European patent for lithium metal phosphates on the basis of lack of novelty. This decision is good news for Valence because it allows the company to further develop and market its own proprietary lithium iron magnesium phosphate cathode material for electric car batteries. However, UT could choose to appeal the decision.
In other news today, the company has announced a licensing agreement with Open Energy Corp (OTC: OEGY) in which Suntech will manufacture, license, distribute and market Open Energy’s solar roof tile product.
Yesterday, Shell and Dominion announced the completion of their joint venture wind energy project, Nedpower Mount Storm. The project, located in West Virginia, is up and running, producing up to 264 MW of wind energy, enough for about 66,000 homes and businesses. The energy generated from the 132 wind turbines will be sold to PJM Interconnection, an electricity market serving 13 Mid-Atlantic states and the District of Columbia.

After reviewing the unsolicited proposal from EDF, Constellation Energy announced that it’s Board of Directors has authorized further communication with EDF regarding the offer. As of this point, however, the Board is still recommending that shareholders vote for the merger with Warren Buffet’s MidAmerican.

Ener1 (HEV) is announcing an important relationship with a heavy duty OEM manufacturer and the Department of Energy to develop lithium ion batteries for hybrid buses and other heavy duty vehicles. It’s not a big deal in terms of monetary compensation at just 1.25 million, but it’s a clear vote of confidence in Ener1 (HEV) which will test their battery technologies under a variety of real world conditions.
Florida Power and Light Company, part of FPL Group, Inc, began construction of a 75 MW solar-thermal plant in Martin County, Florida. The plant, which will be constructed from 180,000 mirrors, is an addition to an existing natural gas/oil-powered power station. Comverge, Inc, just completed an energy-efficient lighting project in Times Square. The project involved replacing the lighting system in the Times Square Arts Center at the request of the property owner. As a result of the project, the building is expected to use 190,000 fewer kilowatt hours of energy per year, keeping more than 200,000 pounds of CO2 out of the environment. Yingli Green Energy announced today that is has signed a sales contract with IBC Solar. Under the terms of the contract, Yingli Green Energy will supply IBC with 91 MW of their PVC modules starting in December 2008 and ending in October 2009. The price of the PVC modules is fixed, but can be adjusted if the market price falls below the fixed price.

Suntech Power (STP) and a + f (a subsidiary of Spain’s Gildemeister Group) worked together to complete two solar power plants in Spain. STP supplied about half of the modules used to complete the plants in Alange (8.5MW) and Alconera (7.4MW) which will be enough power for around 9K households.
