Echelon (ELON) and Convergys (CVG) have announced a collaboration to develop next generation billing solutions for the smart grid. The goal is to allow customers to pass energy usage data from Echelon’s real time system to Convergys real time customer relationship and billing system so they can see how much they’re spending in real time, allowing them to make adjustments for greater energy efficiency.
It’s a busy day on the green energy front for General Electric (GE). Earlier, they announced their $200 million Ecomagination Challenge and have also introduced their WattStation electric car charging system which decreases charging times and allows utilities to manage the impact on the local grid.

General Electric (GE) along with some leading venture capital partners such as Kleiner Perkins, announced today a $200 million contest which seeks to accelerate the advancement of the smart grid and other green energy solutions. The “GE Ecomagination Challenge: Powering the Grid”, invites technologists, entrepreneurs and start ups to share their best ideas.
Raser Technologies (RZ) has agreed to pay $27 million to the lender that provided the financing for the Thermo 1 geothermal power plant right away along with another $6 million within the next year. In exchange, the lender will waive compliance with applicable debt related covenants and obligations for the next year.
MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR) SunEdison division announced its plans to produce racking equipment for its Canadian solar projects with Samco Solar, a division of Samco Machinery. The partnership will be a big benefit to Samco Machinery which has been hit hard in a tough economy. It will produce 15 – 18 permanent jobs for the company and many more temporary positions. STR Holdings (STRI) is up and running at its newly expanded Malaysia plant to meet the growing demand for its solar encapsulant materials. The plant capacity was doubled from 1GW to 2GW and the company has announced they will add another 1GW of capacity next year which would bring the total global capacity to 7.35GW.
