Archer Daniels Midland just announced that they have received a $24.8 million grant to build a biomass plant that will convert waste into fuel ethanol and ethyl acrylate. The refinery will use a step called pretreatment that will also be used in ADM’s ongoing biocrude production efforts.

According to this press release, A-Power will be building a 150 megawatt biomass plant in Thailand. The company has signed an agreement with Thailand’s Biomass Electricity Co., Ltd regarding the plant. Under the $86 million contract, A-Power will design the plant, which will be built in Prachinburi, Thailand. The company reported a big plunge in revenues from the year ago quarter due to the weak economy and lower corn prices. The company reported just $24.7 million in revenues, representing a 75% plunge from the year ago quarter. The EPS loss matched the year ago quarter at -.03/share.

Rentech (RTK) is up in premarket trading about 7% on news that along with ClearFuels Technology will receive up to $23 million in government funds to construct a biomass gasifier at a Rentech facility in Denver. Rentech (RTK) is announcing this morning that they have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Beach Petroleum today to explore the development of a commercial scale manufacturing facility using Rentech’s technology to produce synthetic fuels from synthesis gas derived from Beach Petroleum’s gas resources.

Xcel’s plans to convert their Bay Front power plant to biomass have received the seal of approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The plant, which will be powered by wood biomass from nearby tree harvests, will be the largest biomass-fueled power plant in the Midwest. The power plant should be converted completely to biomass by 2012.
Production has started at BioProcessAlgae, LLC’s (a joint venture between Green Plains Renewable Energy, water filtration group CLARCOR Inc, BioProcessH2O LLC and NTR plc) Phase I photobioreactor pilot project. Algae production has started, and the company will begin gathering data over the next 4 months to determine how well the technology being tested will scale commercially.
