On Tuesday, Greenhunter Energy announced that they have received $30 million in tax-exempt Recovery Zone bonds to expand their Mesquite Lake biomass power facility near El Centro, California.
By the time both phases of the expansion are completed, the facility will provide enough electricity to power 18,000 homes and will create about 642 jobs.
According to this press release, A-Power will be building a 150 megawatt biomass plant in Thailand. The company has signed an agreement with Thailand’s Biomass Electricity Co., Ltd regarding the plant. Under the $86 million contract, A-Power will design the plant, which will be built in Prachinburi, Thailand. Xcel’s plans to convert their Bay Front power plant to biomass have received the seal of approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The plant, which will be powered by wood biomass from nearby tree harvests, will be the largest biomass-fueled power plant in the Midwest. The power plant should be converted completely to biomass by 2012.
NRG has started to evaluate two biomass crops, switchgrass and high-biomass sorghum at its Big Cajun II plant in Louisiana. The tests are part of an effort to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint by burning less coal. The crops being grown are improved varieties of switchgrass and sorghum designed to grow well in Louisiana’s climate, and are provided by Ceres, Inc.

Xcel Energy just announced that it will convert its Bay Front Power Plant in Ashland, WI, to run completely off of biomass. The company plans to install biomass gasification technology in the last coal-fired unit at the plant, once regulators. Under the current timeline, the plant could be completely converted by 2012.

A-Power Energy (APWR) has vaulted about 15% in just the past 20 minutes on news it has signed contracts totaling $75 million with subsidiaries of Anhui Wenergy to build micro grid electricity generation systems using biomass as the fuel. Covanta Holding (CVA) has closed on the acquisition of 2 biomass energy facilities in Maine for $52 million. The purchase increases the number of Covanta biomass facilities to 8 and increases the energy output by 35%. The facilities are wood waste facilities and convert woodchips, sawdust, bark, tree trimmings, agricultural waste and wood recovered from construction sites into energy.
