Pacific Ethanol just announced that it is once again producing ethanol at its Magic Valley facility in Idaho. The plant hasn’t been in production since February 2009, when unfavorable market conditions caused Pacific Ethanol to shut it down. The company received approvals from the court handling its bankruptcy petitions and from its lenders to restart production at the plant in December, and now it is up and running again.
Archer Daniels Midland just announced that they have received a $24.8 million grant to build a biomass plant that will convert waste into fuel ethanol and ethyl acrylate. The refinery will use a step called pretreatment that will also be used in ADM’s ongoing biocrude production efforts.

According to this press release, the company plans to bring its Magic Valley plant in Idaho back online for the new year. The plant, capable of producing 60 million gallons of ethanol annually, should be back up and running in January 2010, as long as the bankruptcy court approves.

Sunoco just announced that it has finished purchasing an ethanol plant in Volney, New York. The plant is capable of producing 100 million gallons of ethanol each year, and will meet approximately 25% of Sunoco’s expected ethanol needs. Sunoco bought the facility from Northeast Biofuels for $8.5 million. The location of the plant was an important consideration in the purchase, as it is close to most of Sunoco’s retail gasoline locations.
Green Plains Renewable Energy just announced that it has signed agreements to buy 2 Nebraskan ethanol plants. By purchasing these plants, Green Plains Renewable Energy will be able to produce 480 million gallons of ethanol each year, 45% more than it currently produces. It will also become the 4th largest US ethanol producer. The company will pay $123.5 million for the plants. By considering a low-carbon fuel initiative, California has managed to anger ethanol producers and petroleum companies in one fell swoop. The California Air Resources Board is debating the implementation of new fuel standards that would require the state to reduce the carbon content of its fuels by 10 percent. Green Plains Renewable Energy just announced that it will work with several other companies to begin producing biodiesel and ethanol from algae. Other companies involved in the venture include Clarcor Inc, a filtration products manufacturer from Tennessee; BioProcessH20 LLC, a photobioreactor and filtration system developer that will license the advanced photobioreactor technology used in converting the algae to fuel and NTR PLC, a company based in Ireland.
