Last week marked a nice sigh of relief for private companies and investors alike. A string of successful IPOs marked the most successful new stock offerings since Facebook stumbled out of the gate. In the last week (ending 07/20/12) all four companies that went public traded above their offer price on their first day of trading. Here is a look at those four companies:
I don’t often agree with Jim Cramer’s recommendation of when to enter or exit a position, but I think he’s spot on in regards to the Tesla IPO which begins trading next week under the ticker TSLA. This is a company that is currently all hype and hope. While the company has some big names behind it including “the taxpayer”, success is far from guaranteed and profits will be a good 3 years away only … Read the rest
A new green stock that traders will undoubtedly have their eye on in the coming months is the first China LED play to trade on a US exchange. China Intelligent Lighting (CIL) began trading today on the AMEX under the ticker CIL. It’s showing excellent liquidity out of the gates, already trading nearly a million shares before the half way point.
Three months ago, Jinko Solar (JKS) withdrew plans for an IPO due to poor market conditions. The IPO market has certainly improved, but I don’t see any improvement in market conditions. That didn’t stop the company from going ahead and opening for trading today on the NYSE with shares pricing at $11 which was at the low end of the expected range. Shares aren’t doing much today, down just a bit at $10.90. Perhaps they … Read the rest
Trony Solar (TRO) was supposed to begin trading on the NYSE today under the ticker symbol TRO, but the company scrapped the IPO due to weak demand for the offering and overall weak market conditions. It has been postponed indefinitely and I’d be surprised if it launched by the end of the first half of next year. If it didn’t get done in this market, where investor enthusiasm is ridiculously high and solars are emerging … Read the rest
JLM Pacific posted today that LDK Solar (LDK) is planning to spin off its polysilicon solar biz in an IPO on the Hong Kong exchange as reported at www.163.com. Shares are trading flat today, but if that rumor is substantiated, it could give shares a bigger boost in the future. What a difference a few weeks makes! On Nov 1st LDK was trading under $5.50/share following the Q-Cells squabble. It’s nearly doubled off that … Read the rest
The first solar IPO in about a year began trading this morning below the expected range of $11 – 13/share around $10/share. Certainly not a hugely successful IPO, but holding in there at a time when solar stocks are generally struggling.
STR Holdings (STRI) makes components called solar power module encapsulants that protect the circuits in the solar panel. The company is profitable and counts some big players as customers (First Solar, Sunpower, BP Solar). … Read the rest
It’s clear that there is a tremendous appetite for the IPO of A123 Systems.. They initially estimated the price range around 9, then upped to 11 and it ultimately priced at 13.50. Trading opened up just a few minutes ago at 16.74 and it’s already up another 15% from there. I never chase IPO’s in the first few days of trading. I’ll have more on this in the coming days, but I always wait for … Read the rest
There was a very exciting announcement in the world of energy this week, and I’ve been taking a hard look at it.
No, it wasn’t the Tiber field find by BP. Although peak oil deniers seized on the discovery as validation of their argument that technology will continue to make vast new reserves of oil accessible and solve the peak oil … Read the rest
The much anticipated A123 Systems IPO is closer to a reality after a year long wait following its IPO registration on 8/8/08. While the launch date has yet to be announced (most likely between Sept 21 – 25), the lithium battery company revealed the expected stock price of $8 – $9.50/share last week and plans to sell 25 million shares, raising more than $200 million in the process. When the stock begins trading, it will … Read the rest
