It’s being announced this morning that EnerDel (HEV) has participated in a Tokyo smart grid project scheduled to come online in a few months. The project involves several companies from around the world including EnerDel, Mazda and Itochu Corp (EnerDel’s sales/marketing partner in Japan and long time investor) and aims to construct a complete smart grid marrying the components of electric vehicles and solar power.

Yesterday it was announced that Ener1 (HEV) will use a portion of the stimulus funds it received to purchase eight electric car power cycling and test systems from Aerovironment (AVAV) to expand the company’s test capabilities at its Indiana facility. The systems are designed to simulate real world driving by repeatedly charging and discharging the lithium batteries. No word on the financials of the deal.

A123 Systems (AONE) has been surging off the bottom over the past 30 minutes on news it will use $5 million from the US Dept of Energy to collaborate with Detroit Edison on a study to find out if electric car batteries can be bundled together to store emergency supplies of power for the electric grid. The company posted an EPS loss of .22/share, which is a bit worse than the .19/share loss reported last year, but better than the .33/loss analyst expected. Advanced Battery Tech (ABAT) reported mixed results after the bell today and traders aren’t all that thrilled. The stock has taking a beating since the August high and it’s getting hit again after hours, down about 9%. The company reported an EPS number of .08/share which missed analyst estimates of .09/share and was flat from the year ago quarter despite a 40% increase in revenues.

Quantum Fuel Systems (QTWW) announced today they are developing and shipping six Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle (CERV) for the US Army designed for quick special ops missions. The vehicle uses Quantum’s Q-Force diesel hybrid electric powertrain system along with a weapons ring for greater fire power.
