Capstone Turbine (CPST) announced a recent order for two C30 liquid natural gas (LNG) microturbines to be used aboard a Type C tanker for the main power supply. Some of the heat will also be recycled to power the microturbine and the main propulsion engines.

Power-One (PWER) updated its financial outlook today. The company expects to post revenues of $240 – $245 million which is below the previously guidance of $260 – $290 million. The company is blaming market conditions and feed-in-tariff cuts in Germany and Italy. Despite the downward revision revenues will still come in about 60% higher than the year ago quarter. The company reports official earnings on May 5th.
It’s not a pleasant evening for the Douglas family which recently purchased 10’s of millions in AMSC stock.. or any shareholder for that matter. The stock is crashing 40% in after hours trading after the company revealed that its main customer Sinovel has refused shipments forcing the company to slash guidance. American Superconductor now expects to report a significant quarterly loss on both a GAAP and non GAAP basis.
It’s sure been a rough few months for SemiLEDs (LEDS). The stock was crushed in January when the company reported earnings and weak guidance. The stock is down another 17% in early trading this morning after the results were even weaker than expected. Kandi Technologies (KNDI) unveiled its new KD5011 electric car at a grand opening ceremony for Hangzhou’s first New Energy Vehicle Showroom on March 29th. The KD5011 is a government approved all electric car that improves upon earlier models with better range. The affordable vehicle (below $5k after government subsidies) in theory will be able to travel up to 150 miles on a single charge.
JA Solar (JASO) and Jabil Circuit (JBL) have inked a deal on a two year joint venture which has JASO supplying 400MW in solar cells as well as module designs. The deal allows Jabil to manufacture 200MW per year in solar modules with JASO at Jabil facilities in China, Poland and Mexico. Enova Systems (ENA), which makes hybrid vehicle drive systems, had a big day today soaring nearly 66% up to the 2010 highs after the company reported a record quarterly revenue number and announced a partnership with LG Chemical. While the company remains unprofitable and will likely remain so for some time, revenues bumped up to $3.7 million which is a 152% increase over the year ago quarter.
Energy Focus (EFOI) is a speculative LED lighting play, but I believe it has the same kind of potential as Nexxus Lighting (NEXS) if it can come up with a few big orders. It hasn’t happened yet and company growth remains stagnant, but the CEO expects growth to resume in the 2nd quarter and on into 2012 when its Intellitube technology (which is currently used at the Navy) becomes available commercially.
Morgan Stanley issued an extremely bullish report on Tesla (TSLA) this morning which sent shorts scrambling for cover and the stock soaring out of consolidation, up nearly 20% as I write this. The firm upgraded TSLA to Overweight and set a base price target of $70 which is nearly triple what the stock was trading at before the report was issued.
