ITC Holdings (ITC) may be the biggest player in the build out and upgrade of transmission lines in order to distribute renewable energy across the US. The company solidifies that with a key ally in its Green Power Express initiative – MDU Resources Group (MDU). Today, ITC announced an agreement with MDU Resources to collaborate on design and development of the project and a possible investment in Green Power Express LP down the road.
Cree, Inc just announced the release of a new line of Z-Rec Silicon-Carbide power diodes: 600V SiC Junction Barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes. These diodes are mainly used in boost diode applications in power factor correction (PFC) circuits, where their improved efficiency gives them an edge over silicon diodes, shrinking AC-DC power supply losses by 10%, due to zero reverse-recovery current.
In an effort to reduce the costs associated with energy use for streelights, the city of Palo Alto, California is demonstrating streetlights equipped with Echelon’s LonWorks technology. Echelon’s technology allows the lights to be managed remotely, as well as connecting them directly to maintenance software. By replacing all of its streetlights with more efficient models by 2015, the city will also reduce the amount of greenhouse gases it produces by 600 to 950 metric tons … Read the rest
Here’s a win-win situation….FPL just announced that its investments in fuel efficiency at its power plants have helped trim its customers costs by almost $3 billion since 2002, and will save customers a cool billion per year starting in 2014. The investments have included converting older plants to burn natural gas instead of oil, and using more efficient technologies to produce energy from natural gas.
General Electric and the Idaho National Laboratory just announced that they have received $2 million in funding from the Department of Energy for a project that transforms waste heat into electricity. CNET News estimates that the technology has the potential to improve the efficiency of industrial engines by 20 to 40 percent. The improvements in efficiency come from improving the Organic Rankine Cycle to convert heat from industrial engines into power in a cost-effective manner. … Read the rest
